Description:
After losing WW1 the Germans were not allowed to have a normal standing army according to the terms of their surrender in the Treaty of Versailles.  They were however, allowed to have a police force and the military equivalent of a small "national guard" force.  To arm these forces the Germans reworked weapons that they still possessed that were manufactured during World War 1, including the Luger pistols in their inventory.  These weapons were stamped with the date "1920", the year in which they were reworked and put into service again.  This 1920 date is generally stamped above the original chamber-stamped manufacture date on Lugers. This 1915 "Artillery" Luger is one of these weapons.  While double dated 4" inch barrel Lugers are encountered often, the 8" Inch barreled Artillery Lugers are very scarce.  These "Reichswehr" arms were refurbished and any worn parts were replaced.  This example has all of it's original numbered parts except for an un-numbered takedown lever which was replaced and never numbered.  The blue finish is very good on this Luger and rates a solid 92 to 93%, but there are some small areas where there has been some light rust, primarily on the sideplate.  The bore is in excellent condition and appears bright.  The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves and it is free from pitting or erosion.  This Artillery Luger still wears the factory original checkered grips as well.  They are numbered to the gun and free from cracks or repairs.  As this is a 1915 production gun, it has the factory original fine adjustable front and rear sights.  They work perfectly, and the slide on the rear sight moves smoothly thru all of the settings.  This D.W.M. comes with a period correct wood bottom magazine, but it is not matching numbered.  This D.W.M. Artillery Luger also comes with an original WW1 holster that was converted from shoulder straps to a belt loop, which is correct for a 1920 double dated Artillery rework.  The holster is in great condition overall.  All of the original stitching is in excellent condition and is still nice and tight.  The tool pouch on the inside of the flap and the externally mounted cleaning rod pouch are both in great shape as well.  The hinge leather is still flexible and strong, as is the rest of the leather comprising the body of the holster.  The only damage to the holster appears to be the last inch or so of the strap that secures the lid is broken off, and there is a small chunk of leather missing on the left edge of the rear of the holster (this is superficial and does not go thru to the interior).  This is a very desirable Artillery Luger rig.  1915 dated D.W.M.s are quite scarce in any condition as they are the 2nd rarest date of manufacture, and this example being a double dated Reichswehr rework makes it even more scarce.  There were only approx. 15,000 1915-date Artillery Lugers made to start with, quite low production compared to 1917 when 90,000 were made.  When you consider how many were likely destroyed, worn out, or captured during WW1 alone it is quite remarkable that this one has survived in such great shape.  It is very likely that this Luger not only served in World War 1 and then in the 1920's and 30's in police or guard service, but was also carried in World War 2 as well by a German Soldier or Policeman during Nazi rule.  It was most likely brought here to the States by an American soldier as a "War trophy" after WW2.  This unique and interesting Artillery Luger would be a fine investment, and would be a great addition to any military collection.
