Description:
#4762 Winchester 1873 RBFMCB, 44WCF with VG++ bore (about a 7-7+ on a scale of 10) and smooth action. Serial numbered in the 273XXX range (1888). The exterior of this rifle has been cleaned to semi-bright, most likely to remove some rust and shallow pitting, but the metal overall is otherwise crisp-edged and devoid of any serious damage or blemishes, other than being stamped at the right side of the barrel at the muzzle with some cryptic numbers of unknown meaning. The cleaned metal can easily be toned down to be looking more natural, if desired, or just left to patina by itself. The wood is very fine, although it is pretty evident that the buttstock is an old replacement, but a good one with the wood just being a little too “proud” at the lower tangs. The stock has an unusual grain pattern, as well …and while it does match the refinished forearm in color, the forearm doesn’t have the same grain pattern. The standard buckhorn rear sight is missing the little serrated elevator, front sight is a correct style except a newer sight with most of the finish remaining. Round barrel ‘73s, while being less expensive and being “standard”, are considerably less common than the octagon barreled rifles, plus it is unusual to find a “no-finish” ’73 with such a nice bore!
