Description:
The Colt Woodsman is one of the most successful and popular .22 automatic pistols of all-time in the United States.  The design was introduced in 1915 and known officially as the "Colt Automatic Pistol Caliber .22 Target Model".  It was a success for the Colt firm, and in 1927 the pistol was renamed the Colt Woodsman.  Colt produced the Woodsman (and pre-Woodsman) models for a total of 62 years, with over 690,000 pistols made.  Collectors today recognize 3 distinct "series" of Woodsman models, with some variations within each series.  This Colt Woodsman is serial number 80173, which makes it's date of manufacture 1931 and part of the very first "Woodsman" series.  This "1st Series" Woodsman Target Model pistol features the Rampant Colt logo and Colt's name stamped on the slide, with the model name "The Woodsman" stamped on the left side of the chamber area of the frame. This Target Model also features a 6 & 5/8ths inches barrel with front and rear adjustable sights.  Because this pistol was made in 1931, it was designed for standard velocity ammo only.  This is verified by the checkered oval section on the grip backstrap.  The grip backstrap designed for high speed ammo has a ribbed oval section.  This pistol is in very good condition overall and is mechanically excellent.  The original factory blue finish still looks very attractive and rates 90%.  The grip straps show some thinning of the finish and the pistol shows some dings and small scratches, but nothing major.  As you can see in the pictures, there are some small spots like the top of the slide that have had some minor surface rust previously, but nothing that removed the factory blue finish.  The bore in this pistol is excellent.  It is bright and clean with strong & sharp rifling.  There is no pitting or erosion whatsoever.  The original checkered American Walnut grips are in excellent shape.  They are free from cracks or repairs, and the checkering is still clean.  This Woodsman Target model comes with one original factory 2-tone magazine.  Everything works on this Colt 100% like the day it left the factory.  The slide works smoothly on the frame and all of the controls work perfectly.  The trigger is excellent on this Woodsman Target model and breaks cleanly with no grittiness.  The internals of this pistol are very clean and do not show any wear to speak of.  It is very likely this pistol has spent most of it's life in storage and has been fired VERY little.  If you have been looking for a nice all-original pre-war Woodsman Target Model for your collection that you could also shoot without feeling guilty, this example would be an excellent choice!
