Description:
#3823 Allen & Thurber 1845 ptd standard sized pepperbox, six shot, 31cal. If not for the poor storage and likely being left for many years laying on one side in a damp location, this would be a much better than average pepperbox. (…..Of course, that's a lot like saying if it had not been for John Wilkes Booth, Abraham Lincoln would have enjoyed the play that night). Very nice grips, functioning well, and the engraving is deep and sharp, as is the barrel address line and hammer markings. However it does have an area of pepper pitting as can be seen in these accompanying photos and so it falls short of the “Fine” condition it otherwise could have been. Even so, it has mostly a thinning finish of plum blue-brown on the barrel group, and is WELL above average for one of these early revolvers. And crude as they were, these pepper-boxes are excellent examples of the main type of weapons used in the Gold Rush Era in my area of Northern California. VG++ $785
