Description:
This all-original American Civil War Maynard Carbine is a nice example of this Massachuetts Arms Company made weapon.  This particular carbine is a "2nd Model" variation and is the most commonly encountered out of the 2 variations.  The Federal Government purchased 20,002 of them for issue to the Union troops, with thousands more purchased by individual states to arm both sides of the conflict.  The "2nd Model" Maynard carbine was very similar to the 1st Model, but did away with the Maynard tape primer ignition system and the patch box/trap in the buttstock.  The Maynard design used a reloadable rimmed brass cartridge with a perforated base.  The cartridge would be loaded with black powder and then a patched bullet pressed in.  The carbine would be opened up and the cartridge inserted into the chamber and then the action would be closed.  The shooter would cock the hammer and place a percussion cap on the nipple which would ignite the powder charge thru the flash hole in the back of the reusable cartridge when the trigger was pulled.  This allowed the soldier to carry lots of pre-loaded cartridges and percussion caps, and gave the solider the ability to load and fire at a much faster rate than a muzzle-loaded rifle or carbine equipped foe.  The Maynard Carbine quickly earned a reputation with the soldiers who carried them as a well built, reliable, and accurate carbine.  This example is a.52 caliber example and is in good shape overall.  The case colors originally on the receiver have faded away and the metal has turned a light gray with some darker areas from prior corrosion.  The barrel retains a surprising amount of original blue finish.  The factory blue finish has turned a little brown in some areas, but the finish has a nice even look to it.  The bore is also good in this Maynard.  It still shows bright with nicely defined rifling.  The bore shows some light frosting but there are no deep pits or areas of concern.  The original Walnut buttstock is in good shape as well on this carbine.  It appears to be completely free from cracks or repairs.  The stock does show some gouges and scratches but nothing outside what would be expected of a Civil War age military issued weapon.  One particularly neat aspect of the stock is that it still shows both of the U.S. inspectors cartouches.  There is a close-up picture of this area on the left side of the wrist where you can see both sets of the inspector's initials boxed in, and stamped into the wood. One set runs parallel to the action lever just behind the receiver, and the the other set is perpendicular to the wrist just past the end of the action lever.  The stock is still nice and tight to the carbine and the butt plate is also still tight to the stock.  Everything on this carbine works 100% perfectly, and it appears to be all the original parts with the exception of the nipple.  The percussion cap nipple appears to be a replacement part; this was a "wear" part and it was expected to be replaced after being used for a length of time.  The action on this Maynard is nice and tight, and the hammer has lots of spring pressure and still has both the half and full cock notches intact.  The trigger works perfectly, it is stiff but breaks cleanly.  The rear sight is also still completely intact and original.  It has 3 settings; out to 100 yards, 300 yards, and 500 yards.  If you have been looking for a really neat and historical Civil War carbine for your collection this 2nd Model Maynard would be an excellent choice.  This example looks like it was actually used in battle but is still in good, servicable condition.  If the new owner so chooses you could still shoot this Maynard carbine as there are several companies making the reloadable brass and plastic black powder cartridges for it.  As this is an antique it can be shipped directly to the buyer.  REDUCED to $1595!
