Description:
Fox Sterlingworth 12 Gauge SxS
1914, FACTORY ORIGINAL, 98%, #1 WEIGHT 30 “BARRELS, EJECTORS!

General Specs: Fox, Year 1914, 12 Gauge, 7lbs 13oz, Side-by-Side
Serial Number: 73797

In the world of A.H. Fox double shotguns, the 12ga. Sterlingworth is the most common of them all…they made tens of thousands of them.  If you want ejectors on your gun the search just got harder, as less than 10% were produced with ejectors.  The 12ga. Sterlingworth is easy to find…if you want just any old gun.  Most have been well used, put away wet, stocks cut, barrels cut, pitted bores, cracked and repaired, poorly restored, etc.  Finding a clean, honest Sterlingworth is difficult.  Well, here we have the HOLY GRAIL OF STERLINGWORTH 12GA. GUNS, sn73797 made in 1914.  Why?  Because this gun is a solid 98% overall FACTORY ORIGINAL CONDITION FOX.  It is one of those guns you ask yourself “how can this be?”.  Most of the time it turns out the gun was well restored…but not always.  This gun is one that was never really used, was well cared for, and well stored over the 104 years of existence.  Examining this gun with the harshest scrutiny you will find 99% dark factory blue barrels, 97% vivid bone and charcoal factory case color, 95% brilliant factory charcoal blue trigger guard and forend iron, 99% stock finish, perfect, untouched flat-top checkering, mirror perfect bores, and perfect screws.  When judging for originality you look for consistency throughout the gun.  This gun is consistent in all areas of examination.  THIS IS A STUNNING STERLINGWORTH!  There is a non-factory “OLD ENGLISH” pad on the gun but the stock is uncut.  If you want the gun with a factory Fox buttplate we can do that for you, but I left the pad for shooters wanting longer LOP.  You may have noticed I mentioned “bone and charcoal case colors”.  Many will look and say the colors don’t look like other Sterlingworth guns they have seen.  Astute Fox collectors are aware that up until about 1915 all Ansley Fox guns had bone and charcoal case colors, and then the switch was made to a cyanide process that was done very well for the balance of production.  Early guns have bone and charcoal case colors.  Many shooters enjoy vintage sporting clays and some field use of their vintage double guns.  The Fox guns with the heavier #1 weight barrels are well suited to the rigors of clay targets and the heavy loads used for waterfowl, turkey, and late season pheasants, as the 7lb. 14oz. weight of this gun will help reduce felt recoil and the balance being 5/8” forward of the hinge pin will help keep those barrels moving on tough crossing shots.  We even make some of these guns into 3” guns.  If you want to own the best and want to make a solid investment in a “condition” gun that you can use afield or at the club, this is your gun.  Affordable excellence with desirable features is what you will get.  Thanks for looking!
