Description:
The Springfield Trapdoor Carbine is the most famous Indian Wars shoulder arm issued to Federal troops. Springfield's Trapdoor Rifles and Carbines were the primary arms the U.S. troops used to fight the indians and were instrumental in the outcomes of many battles and engagements. The Trapdoor Carbine went thru many changes during it's production run. What started as the 1873 Trapdoor Carbine ended up as the 1884 Trapdoor Carbine with several models in between. This is one of the "in-between" known as the 1879 Trapdoor Carbine. It is 100% correct and original. The 1879 Model featured a 3-position hammer, a low arch breech block, a un-dated sideplate, a grooved & knurled trigger, a barrel band without stacking swivels, a trap in the buttplate, and a buckhorn style adjustable sight. This 1879 Model Trapdoor Carbine is serial number 133737 and was manufactured in 1880. While the stock has been lightly sanded you can still make out the inspector's cartouche on the left side of the wrist. The cartouche is a "SWP" over the date 1882 in a rectangle with rounded corners. This stands for Samuel W. Porter who was the government inspector at that time, and the date of 1882 is when it was accepted into service. The finish on this carbine appears to be original and it shows wear and patina. The lock plate still shows a lot of the original blue finish and the case hardened breech block also still shows some of the case colors, particularly in the protected areas. The original blue finish on the barrel has turned to a blue/brown patina but is still attractive without pitted areas. The adjustable rear sight is marked with a "C" on both the base and the ladder for carbine, and the rear sight slide is still tight and functions properly. The bore in this Trapdoor Carbine is pretty good to average. The rifling still shows nicely from the muzzle to the throat, but there is some frosting/light pitting scattered throughout. With the right ammunition this carbine should still shoot great. As mentioned before the stock has been lightly sanded at some point but is in great shape overall. It is free from cracks or repairs and both the inspector's cartouche and the factory applied "circle P" proof are still visible. The original buttplate with the swinging trap door functions perfectly, and still contains an original 3 piece cleaning rod. Everything works on this carbine 100% like the day it left the factory. The action locks up tight, the hammer still has 3 solid positions, and the trigger breaks cleanly. If you have been looking for an authentic and all original 1879 Trapdoor Carbine for your collection this would be a great addition. Also available for sale and pictured is an original Rock Island Arsenal-made leather carbine "boot" that the Federal Cavalry used to secure these Trapdoor Carbines to their saddles. These boots kept the weapon secure and close at hand even at a full gallop. It is in good condition overall and the leather is still pliable. The Rock Island Arsenal name is stamped into the boot and is still clearly legible. It would make an excellent display piece along with this Springfield.
