Description:
This is the nicest example we have ever had as far as anyone can remember.  This is a World War 2 production Savage Model 720 that is U.S. Military proofed and accepted for training pilots and gunners on shooting aerial targets.  The Savage Model 720 is known as a cheaper and no-frills copy of the Browning A5.  Both the U.S. Army Air Corp and the U.S. Navy bought these Model 720s in both short barreled "Riot" configurations, and long barreled versions like this one.  The long bareled versions were sent to training bases/schools to be used in training the art of shooting moving targets with a "lead".  A small number of the long bareled version were also used as guard duty guns in areas where there were lots of personelle due to the shorter lethal range of a shotgun.  The widely accepted and known range of the WW2 production U.S. Military Savage Model 720s is 69,400 to 88,250.  This Model 720 is serial number 83,893 and is 100% original, correct, and matching.  It has a parkerized finish with an oil finished Walnut stock set.  The original parkerizing is in excellent condition and rates 96%.  The only deductions that can be found are some small spots where light surface rust formed at some point and slightly discolored the finish.  As you can see in the pictures, the parkerizing looks great and is nice and uniform on all of the metal parts.  The receiver is stamped on the left side with a "P", an U.S. Ordnance bomb, and "U.S.".  In addition to the standard Savage markings the barrel is also stamped with a U.S. Ordnance bomb and a "P".  Both the reciever and the barrel are stamped with the same serial number.  The serial number on the barrel is on the underside, only visible if you remove the forearm.  The bore in the 26" inch improved cylinder choked barrel is minty and bright.  It shows no dents, bulges, pits, or defects of any type.  The oil finished Walnut stock set is also in excellent condition.  Both the forearm and buttstock are free from cracks or repairs of any kind, and only show some small handling/storage marks.  Everything on this shotgun works 100% like the day it left the factory.  This Savage Model 720 has obviously spent most of it's life in storage as the internals are as pristine as the exterior.  It probably has not been fired more than a handful of times.  If you are a collector of WW2 weapons or military guns in general this Savage would be an excellent addition to your collection.  The historical value alone of this tool used to sharpen our pilots and gunners shooting skills makes it quite an interesting piece.  This is a scarce find, and as you can see from the pictures it would be nearly impossible to find a better example.
