Description:
SUPER RARE MODEL 53 IN .44-40 CALIBER, #970XXX, MADE 1926. Only made from 1924-1932- another victim of the Great Depression- the M-53 is one of the more scarce Winchester lever models. The standard caliber was .25-20 with the .44-40 made in small numbers. They are rarely encountered now and are obviously the most desirable Model 53 chambering. This example came out of here in Montana and has excellent barrel blue with standard buckhorn rear sight and short ramp front sight with blade/bead sight, the receiver blue is the typical dull blue/black used in the 1920s that never adhered well to the case hardening process used on receivers of the period and most now are found totally flaked to silver gray, this one still retains good blue that is mixing heavily with brown/plum flaking and gray in the more handled locations with deep blue on the bolt and loading gate, very tight action, exc. screws, exc. stock and forearm with tight wood to metal fit and correct steel butt plate, best of all is that the bore is bright and minty! Almost never seen in any condition, this one is unaltered and unmessed with.
