Description:
SOLD...Antique 1873 Winchester 44-40 octagon barrel. Here is a very nice and un molested 1873 Winchester. It is in the highly sought after 44-40 caliber and has the octagon barrel. Standard 24” octagon barrel. The S/N is early third model 158580 and was made in 1884. The bore is very nice.. Shows very strong rifling with just some minor black powder roughness. NO big pits or craters and NO rings or bulges. A bit above average bore on this one. It shoots great. The mechanics are excellent. It feeds, fires and ejects perfectly. No backed out primers or bulged cases. Head space is perfect. Strong springs throughout. Perfect hammer notches and sear at safety notch and full cock. Action is very smooth like new with no issues. Still has the original dust cover that is a little loose in the closed position as most all are but still retracts with the lever throw. All markings are excellent. Screw heads are sharp and not all burred up but the dust cover screw snows some turning.. Original rear flat top sight with original elevator. Front sight is probably original or period of use rocky mountain blade type. The over all metal is excellent and has never been cleaned on or messed with at all. Has an even medium brown patina with no pitting anywhere. Just the way you love to find these ole Winchesters. Has some light dings on the top of the receiver and a couple small dings on the left side of the barrel. Again, all very minor and do not detract from the gun but I want to give complete and honest descriptions to all my customers. The wood is excellent as well. The forearm has NO splits or cracks. Fits full and proud to the metal on the sides and just a tad under the metal on the bottom from honest carry and saddle wear. Some very minor light dings and scratches as normal but no issues what so ever. The butt stock is excellent and fits even and proud to the metal in places. Has two VERY small and minor grain splits that are hardly noticeable coming off the comb behind the upper tang. They are very tight and solid and I did not even see them until I took the close up photos of the upper tang... They are not going anywhere and is caused by the wood drying out as there are no dents or bash marks showing that would cause them.. A couple light scratches and no dings and no other issues.. NO gaps in the wood at all and again I would rate the wood as excellent on this ole 73. That is about all I can say about this one. Just a very nice and crisp 1873 that has been well cared for over all these years. Getting very hard to find these guns that have not been messed with and not abused or tinkered with at a very reasonable price. Call me at 765-728-8049 for any questions or more photos. $50 insured shipping. Don't miss this one!!! Any Winchester collector would be proud to have this in their collection and is a great shooter...
