The Winchester Model 1873 lever action was manufactured from 1873 to 1919 with total production topping approximately 720,610 guns. The Model 1873 was quite a success for the Winchester firm both here in the states and abroad. It was offered in 22RF, 32-20, 38-40, and 44-40 calibers with 44-40 being the most powerful and popular caliber. The '73 Winchester was also offered in a musket, a rifle, and a saddle ring carbine model like this example. The Model 1873 is known today as the "Rifle That Won the West" due to it's huge popularity with settlers and cowboys on America's Western frontier in the 1870's onward. It was a common sight at that time to see these men armed with a Colt Single Action and a Winchester Model 1873 both chambered for the "man stopper" 44-40 cartridge. The Winchester 1873 offered for sale here looks very much like it was involved in some of that action and has witnessed it's share of history. This example is serial number 131176A and is a Saddle Ring Carbine model built in 1883. It is all original except for a replacement lever and lever locking key, and the lever looks to have been replaced a long time ago. The original blue finish has been worn away to a even looking gray and brown patina. The bore still shows nice rifling and some brightness, with patches of pitting scattered throughout. The barrel is free from bulges, dents, or deep pits. The original Walnut stock set is still sound and tight to this carbine. It has wear and handling marks consistent with the rest of the gun, and has a nice look to it overall. There is one minor crack in the wrist on the left side that can be seen in the close up picture of that area. The upper and lower tangs support that wrist area and it appears stable. The original buttplate is still in place complete with the sliding trap. The buttplate is still tight to the stock and the sliding trap door still works perfectly. Everything on this Winchester '73 SRC seems to work perfectly. The lever action works nicely and moves the sliding dustcover in the rearward position like it was designed to. The bolt locks into battery nicely and is free from play or wobble. The brass cartridge elevator works properly and snaps into the proper positions "in-time". The hammer still has both the safety position and full cock, and the trigger breaks cleanly without any grittiness. If you have been looking for a Winchester Model 1873 Carbine that has a lot of character and looks like it has been in gun fights and has seen a lot of miles in a saddle scabbard, this is it! It's definitely an honest witness to a lot of American history and would make a great display piece/decorator to hang over the fireplace or in a "man cave".
