Description:
SOLD PENDING FUNDS Offered for sale is an assemblage that consists of: M1866 Springfield second Allin conversion and Indian Wars 1872 Hagner No. 1 cartridge box. After the Civil War the  .58 caliber muzzle loading 1861 Springfield rifled muskets and variants (1863 and 1864) were converted to cartridge guns. Erskine Allin devised the “trapdoor” mechanism for the conversion.  The first Allin conversion (1865) was chambered for a .58 caliber rim fire cartridge. The second Allin conversion (1866) used the .50-70 Government center fire cartridge. The introduction of the 1866 Springfield had significant impact with respect to the Indian Wars. The plains tribes had adapted their battle tactics to the muzzle-loading musket. They learned that after the first volley there was a delay while the musket was reloaded, which allowed a charge without much risk of being fired upon. Three battles along the Bozeman Trail in 1866 and1867 during Red Cloud’s War demonstrate the advantage the breech loading 1866 Springfield afforded the U.S. troops. Before the 1866 Springfield was issued a combined force of Great Plains tribes massacred troops using muzzle-loading muskets under the command of Captain William Fetterman. A few months later troops had been issued the 1866 Springfield. The rapidity of fire of this weapon, which surprised the much larger Indian force, enabled troops to survive the Wagon Box Fight and Hayfield Fight.  The photos show the overall condition of the items in the assemblage. The rifle is very nice with an excellent bore and stock cartouches are clearly visible. The assemblage price is at a discount to the total price of the separate items. Buyer pays the actual cost of shipping and insurance. Payment is by cashiers check or postal money order.
