Description:
A truly remarkable Merkel sidelock 303E O/U shotgun with two factory fitted sets of barrels:  One 30” 12 gauge and one 28” 16 gauge.  This incredible set was proof dated January of 1960.  The 30”, 12 gauge barrels have .725” bore diameters, 2 ¾” chambers, with a nominal wall thickness of .040”.  They are choked a tight mod (.018”) and light full (.027”) and topped with a raised solid rib that tapers from 3/8” to ¼” and mounted with an ivory front bead.  The 28”, 16 gauge barrels have .667” bore diameters, 2 ¾” chambers, with a nominal wall thickness of .040”.  Theses are choked skeet (.005”) and modified (.015”) and topped with a raised solid rib that tapers from 3/8” to ¼” and mounted with an ivory front bead.  Interestingly the gun with either set of barrels weighs the same, 7 lbs. 8 oz.!  Nothing is quite as dramatic or well done as the game scene engraving on the frame and on the hand detachable side locks.  Quail and pointing dogs on the left side and fox and pheasants on the right side all in very deep relief engraving.  The rest of frame in masterfully cut in floral and scroll motif with nearly 100% coverage.  You will note the name “Loyd Wright” is engraved on the trigger guard, on the left side of both sets of barrels and embossed in gold on the front of the beautifully fitted oak and leather luggage case.  The stock was selected for its sturdy, tight grain and very dark color.  Stock dimensions:  14 5/*" LOP over the factory buttplate, 1 1/2" DAC and 2 11/16" DAH with neutral cast.  The three piece forearms and the prince-of-Wales stock are very finely checkered.  Mechainically it is an auto ejector gun with single selective trigger and non-automatic safety.  The gun is as tight as the day it was new and with the exception of a few handling marks on the stock checkering the gun is 98%+ overall.
