Description:
Harpers Ferry Model 1842 "US" percussion musket dated 1851, .69 caliber, 58" OAL with 42" round barrel. This is one of about 103,000 M1842 muskets that were made at the Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia. Lock marked "HARPERS FERRY 1851" rear of the hammer with American Eagle motif stamped in front of hammer. The left side of barrel is marked with visible V/P (Eagle Head) & also has inspectors mark “PB” above left barrel flat. U.S. stamped on butt plate tang. Overall in very good condition, mechanically sound with crisp action. Metal surfaces have a smooth mottled brown patina. The walnut stock has a "flat finish" with inspector marks & carvings including initials “M. K.” on left side along with unidentified symbols. Bayonet marked U.S. and fits well on the musket. Period correct replacement parts including nipple, ramrod and sling. The M1842 was the first percussion musket made by both national armories & had fully interchangeable parts with the Springfield Contract.
