Description:
Used. This rifle was manufactured at Nagoya Arsenal in Japan in 1945 as a "last ditch" Type 99 subsitiute rifle. According to Military Rifles of Japan by Fred Honeycutt this rifle was converted to .30-06 during the Korean war for use in occupied Japan. Apparently the story is that after years of occupation the Allied powers agreed that it was time to employ and arm ex-Japanese soldiers to guard structures of moderate importance since looting was still a problem. So many warehouses and railway stations were put under guard by these ex-Japanese soliders. There was a backlash in that the Japanese public was so offended by their 'soliders' carrying US made weapons that they complained enough and finally the overseeing authorites agreed that if they went to the trouble converting a bunch of Arisakas to .30-06 then the problem would be solved. They also hired more out of work Japanese civillians to convert these rifles and this helped put some more of the populace back to work. The conversion was done to about 6,650 rifles. The bayonet that accompanies this rifle is on US madegear. In the end the occupying forces got to have Japanese guarding some installations, the public was happy and the supplying of ammuniton and webgear was simplified to suit the needs of the occupation forces.
