Hammerless Sidelocks - James Woodward is probably the most under rated of the London makers. I believe not because they were any less quality than Purdey or Boss but because they made very few guns, less than 5000 in total of guns they actually made themselves. This resulted in the fact that they are just less known.
Getting to know them is a worthwhile endeavor as they made guns of stunning quality and are for now at least much less money than Purdey (who owns Woodward now!) and Boss, and Holland guns.
This shotgun is a classic example of a Woodward as it is their BEST model with the two major features Woodward is known for, the snap action (forward underlever) and the regal arcade-ed fences. I personally hunt with a forward underlever shotgun and like them very much. To open the gun you balance it in your left hand and then push the lever below the guard with theof your hand between your thumb and the first finger. It easily falls forward and the barrels almost magically open!
