Description:
Dated 1830 as a flintlock made in Valley Forge, Pa. this is one of 1000 Evans made from 1830 to 1831 and typical of those held in Southern arsenals through the 1850's. Drum type percussion conversion with a civilian hammer is the method used extensively by the Confederacy early in the Civil War, possibly by  Baker, of Fayetteville.. Metal is smooth with scattered pitting and has been cleaned by hand a long while ago. Wood is figured walnut and has an old coat of varnish. Belt hook was removed with 2 holes plugged at time of conversion. See Flayderman 6A-029, pg. 330. More out there at twice the price.
