Description:
This Colt Model 1917 revolver was made just after World War 1 in the last year of production, 1920.  This large frame .45 ACP revolver was derived from Colt's "New Service" line and proved itself a success in World War 1, earning a reputation for being both reliable and durable in the harsh trench warfare environments.  While the 1911 model would end up the most famous American sidearm of the Great War and remain the main sidearm of the U.S. Military until the 1980's, the Model 1917 carved it's own place in U.S. service history.  The Model 1917 revolver made by both Smith & Wesson and Colt would go on to serve with our forces in a substantial capacity in the inter-war years and thru World War 2, and serve in a limited capacity with both U.S. forces and the South Vietnamese in the Vietnam War.  The 1917 was particularly prominent within "Tunnel Rat" units in Vietnam.  The Model 1917 was also a success in the civilian market when sold as surplus, and has developed quite a collector's following today.  This particular Model 1917 is in excellent shape mechanically but has spent some time improperly stored during it's life.  As you can see in the pictures the exterior of this revolver is covered with pin-prick spots caused by storage in a humid place.  The original factory blue finish shows little to no wear from being used other than a faint drag line around the cylinder.  Both the grip straps still show lots of the original blue finish around the pin prick corrosion spots.  The original Walnut grips are in excellent condition.  They are free from wear, cracks, or repairs, and both sides are numbered to the gun on the reverse.  As mentioned before, it is obvious that this Colt was fired and carried very little if at all.  The bore is minty and bright.  There is none of the pin prick pitting seen on the exterior in the bore, and the rifling is prominent with sharp lands and grooves.  The cylinder bores are equally as clean and bright.  The action is smooth whether worked in single or double action, and it is perfectly "in time".  At full lock there is zero play in the cylinder.  The trigger works perfectly as well, breaking cleanly without any drag or grittiness.  Everything on this Colt Model 1917 works 100% like the day it left the factory.  If you have been looking for one of these Model 1917s to add to your collection to shoot this would be an excellent choice.  If the exterior appearance matched the minty mechanics and bore, it would be too nice to enjoy at the range!
