Description:

Early 1800s Antique Pennsylvania FLINTLOCK MUSKET

Henry Leman Style Flintlock Smooth Bore Musket

Here we present an antique Full Stock Flintlock Musket, made circa the early 1800s, likely in Pennsylvania.

The American Longrifle, more commonly, but less correctly, known as the 'Kentucky rifle', was described by Captain John G. W. Dillin in the dedication to his seminal 1924 book, The Kentucky Rifle:

“From a flat bar of soft iron, hand forged into a gun barrel; laboriously bored and rifled with crude tools; fitted with a stock hewn from a maple tree in the neighboring forest; and supplied with a lock hammered to shape on the anvil; an unknown smith, in a shop long since silent, fashioned a rifle which changed the whole course of world history; made possible the settlement of a continent; and ultimately freed our country of foreign domination.

Light in weight; graceful in line; economical in consumption of powder and lead; fatally precise; distinctly American; it sprang into immediate popularity; and for a hundred years was a model often slightly varied but never radically changed.”

This .43 Caliber specimen features a stout 43-5/8 inch barrel with a smooth bore. The tiger-striped stock is equipped with a brass patch box and crescent butt plate. The barrel and lock are unmarked externally. It also has a double set trigger for more precise shooting. This musket is very similar to the work of Henry Leman of Pennsylvania. This would have served primarily as a game gathering firearm, but could certainly put to work defending the camp or homestead.

The overall condition is good. The metal surfaces bear an even, dark patina. The stock has been repaired several times in the last 200 or so years and is stable now. The bore is in fine condition, smooth and shiny. The action is not currently functional as the trigger will not release the cocked hammer. Here is a handsome historical musket for your collection that would look excellent on display.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 43-5/8 inches.
