Description:

CIVIL WAR Antique SPRINGFIELD US Model 1816 MUSKET

Dated 1830, Updated to Percussion for CW

Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1816 Musket, made in 1830 in at the national armory at Springfield, Massachusetts. This fabulous smoothbore .69 caliber musket would have originally been made in the flintlock format. In fact, the Model 1816 was the last U.S. martial firearm made in flintlock. Since it was a proven design with many still in service, some were updated to the percussion firing system. These were some of the most abundant weapons available to both sides, being in the hands of state militias in the first days of the American Civil War.

This example is a Type II. The lock is marked with a Federal Eagle over “U.S.” The back of the lock is marked “SPRING/FIELD/1830”. The breach of the barrel is marked with view and proof marks. The front of the trigger guard is marked “CAY”. The butt plate is marked “US”. Single letter “S” inspector initial found throughout. There is a single letter “V” on the comb, along with a “3” or “w”. The inspector cartouches in the walnut stock are extremely clear, especially for the gun’s age and use. Cursive “AH” (Asbell Hubbard) and “A/2” are located on the left side, opposite the lock. There are “AW” in block letters and “JS” in script just behind the trigger guard. This musket is loaded with interesting markings.

This specimen looks like it came straight out of the attic. It is very well-preserved. The bore is coated with a fine layer of dust. The iron parts bear a very dark, very even patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in great shape. The action is excellent. Here is a fine example of a musket that was made in the 1830s and was brought back from the brink of obsolescence to fight the Civil War.
