Description:
This is a fine example of a model 1866 Chassepot paper cartridge firing rifle converted to fire the 11x59R Gras black powder brass-cased cartridge. The rifle was orignally manufactured in 1868 and then converted in 1879. Nearly all the numbers match including the cleaning rod. The only part that does not is the rear sight. The Rifle was Originally made by Manufacture Imperiale in Chatellerault France and re-arsenaled at the St. Etienne Arsenal. There is a faint remnant of the Imperiale Chatellerault marking on the receiver. Markings on the barrel include the inital of the factory director (Circle B) and the inital of the cheif arms inspector (Circle D) as well as the letters AF which are the initals of the company that supplied the steel for the barrel. Among the stock cartouches that appear on the rifle the most interesting is the roundel on the buttstock. This indicates that the rifle was accepted into French military service in September of 1879. The MA in the center of the roundel is the official army acceptance marking. The M.S is an inspectors initals and the T is a factory marking where the stock was made. Overall a really historically interesting rifle with lots of markings and a great bore. The sling may be original but I cannot say for sure.
