Description:

Antique Civil War Dwight, Chapin & Company Ballard Carbine

1 of Only 1000 Produced for KY During Last Year of the War

Here we present an antique Dwight, Chapin & Company Ballard Carbine, made circa 1864. The Ballard is an interesting rifle in that it began its career during the American Civil War, when it was produced in relatively small numbers (only about 24,000 from 1862-1873) by five different manufacturers. It was ultimately made a commercial success when made into one of the staples of the Marlin Company. Charles H. Ballard invented the rifle and the famed arms agents Merwin & Bray secured government contracts and lined up the firearms companies to make them.

This example is one of only a thousand. Having secured a contract from the U.S. government, Merwin & Bray had already bogged down one of their makers, Ball & Williams. They took part of the order to another manufacturer: Dwight, Chapin & Company. Dwight, Chapin & Co. were only able to produce 115 of the 1,000 that they had contracted for and were forced to declare bankruptcy. Merwin & Bray acquired the few finished carbines and the rest of the unassembled guns and gave them to Ball & Williams for completion. Those 1,000 carbines were all sold to Kentucky in April of 1864, the seat of guerilla warfare and martial law by this time in the war.

This carbine is what you could call a stalwart, solid and handy little gun. It features a manual extractor, which is operated from the bottom of the forearm, a windage adjustable front sight, and a two-leaf rear sight that goes out to 500 yards.

“Merwin & Bray/AGT’S.N.Y./680” is marked on the left side of the frame. “Ballard’s Patent/Nov. 1861” on the right.

The overall condition is fine. The original blue finish is 75% and turning a deep plum. Case colors are still visible on the hammer. The markings are clear. The walnut stock is in good shape. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.
