Arthur Burdett Frost (1851-1928), known for not only his sporting art but also for being the initiator of the comic medium in the late1800's and early 1900's, was a pillar in American art history. Notable collections of the artist's work can be found at the Library of Congress, Smithsonian American Art Museum's Renwick Gallery, George Eastman House, University of California, Rice University, and the Carnegie Arts of the United States Collection. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with the renouned Thomas Eakins later studying with Gilbert Tucker Margeson and William Merritt Chase. Initially Frost became known for his illustrations in Lewis Carroll's "Rhyme? and Reason?" (1883) and also "A Tangled Tale" (1885). He illustrated Joel Chandler Harris' well known "Tales of Uncle Remus" (1880). His illustrations greatly helped these books' success and gave the artist great notariety. Later in his career, Frost honed his ability to replicate scenes from real life in a pictorial realism. His authentic details of hunting and fishing became a cornerstone of his legacy, and many of his paintings have sold for more than $100,000. In this signed (lower right) and rare oil on canvas, "Hunter and Guide", of an Adirondack scene, there is an excitment of the instant when game is encountered, and this feeling is vividly brought to life. Interestingly, the hunter in this painting closely resembles the hunter in another of Frost's works, "Success", that sold for $72,000. This painting was probably painted in the 1880's or 1890's and has been in this owner's possession for about 40 years. It is in its original framing. There is a small repair shown in the photo of the back slighly right of center, but the rest of the painting remains in excellent condition. The painting is offered at a new bargain price and represents a huge opportunity to acquire a beautiful painting by one of the 19th century's top sporting art painters. Painting dimensions are 21.5 inches X 18.5 inches framed and 17.5 inches X 14.5 inches image size. SOLD |
