Description:
U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1884 Trapdoor in .45-70 Government. 32 1/2" barrel with a square post and pinned blade front sight and rear Buffington sight with the correct R stamped on the sight leaf. There are two barrel bands, the one closest to the action is grooved at the top for the sight leaf to rest, the second sports sling swivels, and the trigger guard supports a sling swivel and has an extended tang. The top of the trapdoor is stamped "U.S./MODEL/1884", and the top of the metal butt plate is "US" stamped. The one piece walnut stock has a cartouche on the left side with three letters, "LWP" and the date, "1889", and the wood at the end of the extended trigger guard is stamped with a P inside of a circle. Metal Condition: There is considerable amount of blue remaing with some beginning to brown, and there are scratches and worn areas in the blue finish, and the barrel has small scratches and shallow dings.  Wood Condition: There is an unusual round hole in the stock on the left side next to the trigger guard (see third photograph). It measures approximately 3/16" in width, 1/2" deep and is thread. Very odd! Also, there are a couple of very short age cracks in the stock and numerous scratches and dings, and a number of chips and gouges.  Bore Condition: The bore is in very good condition with good lands and grooves and good shine, has just a light hint of frosting here and there. Manufactured: Circa 1886-1891 and serialized 465200. Please note: There are a total of 11 photographs for the rifle and all can be viewed and supersized at Cabela's Gun Library .
