Description:

Antique SPRINGFIELD US M 1870 TRAPDOOR Rifle 50-70

50-70 GOVT Conversion of Civil War Musket

Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1870 Trapdoor Rifle in .50-70 GOVT, made circa 1871 at the federal armory. Muskets were out and cartridges were in after the end of Civil War hostilities. The reunited American government wanted to update their arsenal without throwing out the hundreds of thousands of muskets they had just produced for the bloody fratricidal feud, so they utilized a breech-loading conversion invented and named for Erskine S. Allen, the Springfield Armory Master Armorer.

This rifle is marked “1870/Federal Eagle/U.S.” on the top of the breech block. The lock is Civil War dated “1863” and marked “U.S. SPRINGFIELD”.

The overall condition is good. This rifle was refurbished by a distributor prior to being sold as a surplus weapon. The finish is about complete. The markings are clear. The bore is bright with good rifling. The action is strong.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 29-5/8 inches.

Caliber: .50-70 GOVT
