Description:

SWISS Antique BERN Model 1878/81 BOLT ACTION Rifle

Excellent Rifle with Unique Rear Sight!

Here we present an antique Swiss Military Waffenfabrik Bern Vetterli Model 1878/1881 Bolt Action Infantry Rifle, made circa 1880. Here is another great example of how European firearms technology was developing in the decades leading up to the Great War. The Vetterli uses a bolt action mechanism along with a very Winchester lever action rifle-like cartridge lifting system and a tube magazine. This early repeating bolt action rifle held 12 rounds of 10.4x38mm Rimmed Rimfire cartridges. This provided fantastic volume of firepower in a repeating rifle, but it sure made it heavy.

Several features make this a very distinct rifle. First, is the rear sight, which has a sort of snail-like appearance. This is what gave it the “1881” designation. The base is numbered out to 1200 meters, while a tug on the rear sight leaf itself reveals an extended range to 1600. Second, the butt plate is a crescent shape. And third, the receiver with its loading gate and tubular bolt. Internally, is a neat little feature in that there is a dual firing pin for more certain detonation of their rimfire cartridges. Muzzle is crowned. This rifle is built like anything Swiss, solid and packed with features.

The left side of the receiver is marked “WAFFENFABRIK/BERN” and “M:78”. The comb of the stock has two dissecting inspection marks.

The overall condition is fine. The original blue finish is 90%. The markings are clear. The serial numbers match. The stock shows standard handling and is in very good shape. The bore is sharp and bright. The action is excellent. Here is a fantastic example of a late 19th Century Swiss Infantry Rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches.
