Description:
For sale, a beautiful 1938 vintage Fox Sterlingworth model double in 16 gauge.  The "Sterlingworth" model was first introduced in 1911 by the Fox company and was made in 12, 16, or 20 gauge until 1942.  The Sterlingworth was a boxlock design with extractors and double triggers, and was offered in various chokes in 26, 28, or 30 inch barrels.  A single trigger could be special ordered.  It featured a case colored action with the barrels and triggerguard finished in a gloss blue, and a checkered Walnut pistol-grip stock with a buttplate.  This 16 gauge Sterlingworth is serial number 375,294 which makes it's date of manufacture 1938, and also falls in the known serial number range of 300,000 to 378,481 for 16 gauge Sterlingworths.  This Fox was built after the Savage company bought out Fox, therefore the action is stamped with the Fox Sterlingworth name but the barrels are stamped "Savage Arms Corporation, Utica, N.Y. U.S.A."   This gun appears to be in excellent original condition.  The boxlock action still shows a lot of the original case colors all over the receiver including the flats.  The case colors are worn only at the natural balance point from carry wear and on the thumb pad of the lever.  The gloss blue finish also still appears to be in excellent condition on the barrels and trigger guard.  Only under very close observation can we find any handling marks on the barrels, and they do not detract from this shotgun's clean appearance.  The 28" inch barrels are choked IC and Mod, and they have bright and clean bores.  They are completely free from dents, bulges, or pitting.  All of the factory stampings on this shotgun are clean and crisp.  The checkered Walnut stock set is in excellent condition overall, and is exceptionally beautiful due to the contrasting grain and figure showing.  The stock set is free from cracks or repairs and is 100% solid.  The checkered pistol grip shows a little marring of the checkering on the right side panel, but is otherwise clean and crisp.  The checkering panel on the forearm is completely clean and crisp.  The original buttplate is just as clean as the rest of the gun, it is free from cracks, chips, or wear, and is perfectly fit to the buttstock.  The length of pull is 14 & 3/8ths inches including the buttplate, or 14" inches to the end of the wood.  The drop at the heel is 2.5 inches.  This double weighs 6lbs 3 ounces total so its a perfect lightweight field gun.  Everything on this Fox Sterlingworth works 100% like the day it left the factory.  If you have been looking for an American made 16 gauge double barrel that you can carry in the field or display with pride, this Fox Sterlingworth would be an excellent choice.  This classy shotgun is certainly a gem.
