BLACK POWDER Antique COLT SAA “Frontier” in 44-40
Original & All Matching “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER”
Here we present an antique Black Powder Frame Colt Single Action Army “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER” in .44 WCF, made in 1893 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt SAA had already been adopted by the U.S. government and was very popular commercially by the time Colt came out with this chambering. What made this revolver and caliber combination so natural and desirable was that Winchester was already chambering their lever action rifles and carbines in this proprietary cartridge. So, instead of purchasing two different types of ammunition, a cowboy or other civilian could load the same ammunition in both long gun and sidearm.
The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER”. The frame bears the ’71, ’72 and ’75 patent dates and rampant colt. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F. A. MFG. CO HARTFORD CT U.S.A.” The hard rubber grips also bear the rampant colt logo.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces have a mild patina with clear markings. The serial numbers match, including the grips. The original hard rubber grips have seen years of use, being worn nearly completely smooth. The bore is in good condition, though you can tell it has been shot quite a bit. The action is crisp and excellent. Here is a Colt Frontier Six-Shooter that has been there and done that and could tell some tales.
