Description:
The brainchild of John M. Browning in 1895, the Winchester Model 1895 was the first lever action rifle with a box magazine to be successful. The box magazine and strong action of the Model 1895 allowed this weapon to be chambered in the powerful smokeless powder cartridges which were just developed at that time, and permitted the use of pointed spitzer bullets which could not be loaded on top of each other in a tube magazine. The Model 1895 was produced from 1896 to 1940, with over 425,000 produced. It was both a commercial and military success, with the U.S. and Russian Governments purchasing 1895's for their militaries. During the long production run of the Winchester Model 1895 there were multiple variations made and they are very collectible today. This example is a 1895 Carbine model chambered in the 30-06 cartridge. It is serial number 421,467 which makes it's date of production 1926. This 1895 Carbine has a lot of character with a great look to it. Originally this carbine had a saddle ring on the receiver and an upper handguard and rear sight, all of which have been lost or removed. In place of the rear sight, a vintage Redfield receiver mounted adjustable peep sight has been installed at some point. This Winchester retains about 50% of the original factory blue finish on the metal parts, with the balance having a nice silver and gray patina from wear. On the left side of the receiver you can see that there is more original blue finish left than the right side. This is because at one time this 1895 had a Lyman #21 "Lifting Lyman" sight installed on it that protected the finish. As you can see, when the Lyman #21 was removed and replaced with the Redfield sight the extended front pivot screw was left in place. The 22" inch barrel has a great bore with strong rifling that still looks clean and bright, and the action on this Winchester is still smooth and locks up tight. While this carbine has apparently been carried around quite a bit over the years, it was shot very little. The internals are still super tight without any slop in them from being worn. The original Walnut stock set minus the upper handguard are in great shape structurally, and show the same character as the rest of the carbine. Both the buttstock and forearm are free from cracks or repairs, and just show minor handling marks and wear without any major dents, gouges, or damage. The trap in the metal buttplate still opens properly, and stored inside is a period pull-thru bore jig on a string. Everything on this Winchester Model 1895 Carbine works 100% like it did when it left the factory, and it should be a lot of fun to shoot at the range. If you have been looking for one of these 1895's that is affordable but still has a great original look to it, this is it!!
