Description:
The Winchester Model 52 .22 rifle line is considered by many to be the finest American made rimfire rifle model line ever made.  These American classics have been collected and sought after for decades.  This particular Model 52 is a Model 52-D Target model, which was a single shot bolt action rifle made for match target competition.  The Model 52-D was an improved version of the 52-C, and came standard with a heavy free floated barrel or an optional heavy barrel with adjustable bedding device.  The rifle also came with an adjustable target trigger and the heavy stock had a built in rail for a hand-stop.  The 52-D could be had with or without Unertl scope mounting blocks, and was set up from the factory for match style peep sights.  All in all, fewer than 750 52-D Target models were ever shipped from Winchester so it is a quite scarce variation of the 52 series.  This 52-D Target is serial number 115082 D, which makes it's date of manufacture 1963.  This rifle has the special order option of the factory installed adjustable bedding system built into the stock.  It has also been fitted with Redfield International Match adjustable sights front and rear.  This rifle has led an interesting life as it is British proofed indicating time spent in England, and has made it's way back to the States via the importer Duffy's Inc. in Sparks, Maryland (engraved on bottom of barrel).  This Winchester appears to be 100% original finish.  The factory blue finish still looks great on the metal part with the only real finish wear showing on the bolt handle knob and the upper receiver tang area, and some scattered minor handling marks on the trigger guard and barrel.  The bore on the factory 28" heavy profiled target barrel is minty and bright.  It is completely free from pitting or erosion, and the rifling still looks sharp and defined.  The original Walnut match/target style stock is also in great shape, and is mechanically excellent.  It is free from cracks or repairs and just shows minor handling marks and wear consistent with the rest of the rifle.  The factory adjustable bedding system is in perfect working order, and is easily adjusted with a flathead screwdriver thru the two forward access ports on the forearm.  The stock has a factory Winchester branded recoil pad installed on it that pulls a little over 13.5 inches at the end of the pad.  The Redfield sights are in good condition overall.  The original finish shows some patina and wear, but they still look pretty good and are mechanically sound.  All the adjustments work perfectly on them, but as you can see in the close-up pictures of the rear sight, the end of the windage adjustment shaft is slightly bent.  The bend does not affect the function of the sight in any way.  Everything on this Winchester works 100% like the day it left the factory.  The action is smooth and locks up tight.  The trigger is set perfectly to break like a glass rod with no creep or grittiness.  This vintage rifle will probably out-shoot modern match rifles that cost 3 and 4 times as much.  If you have been looking for one of these vintage Winchesters to add to your collection and perhaps take to the range, this 52-D Target would be a great choice and should continue to be a great investment as well.
