Description:

Merwin & Hulbert are best known for their revolvers of advanced and superior design, beginning in 1876.  However, until bankruptcy intervened in 1894, this company issued catalogs full of other sporting goods items.

This set of poker chips with playing cards was nicely cased in a high-quality walnut box.  The brass fixtures, lock, and assembly method reminds one of a Colt cased revolver.  Begin by noticing the 10 screws that hold the bottom board to the case sides.  The tight joints reinforced with inletted small rectangles of wood are notable.  The use of brass screws, hinges, and compartment pull nobs also resemble that of early cased revolvers

The box top measures 10” x 5-1/4” x 1”.  The bottom of the case measures 10” x 5-1/4” x 2-3/4”.  There are two gambling chip lift-out trays that fit into compartments that measure 3-1/2” x 4-3/8” x 2-1/2” deep.  The playing card compartments measure 7/8” x 4-3/8” x 2-1/2” deep.

The poker chips are made of a material like hard rubber, with smooth shiny surfaces.  Those shiny surfaces do show some degree of scuffing from expected use.  These round chips mostly measure 1-3/8” in diameter, with a few being 1-7/16”.  The larger chips represent replacements added long ago.  There are three colors of chips.  Included are 125 light brown chips (123 that are 1-3/8” diameter).  There are 47 brick-red chips (29 that are 1-3/8” diameter).  There are 29 black chips (all are 1-3/8” diameter).  The two boxes of playing cards are later replacements.

The original key comes with this cased set.  The key locks down the case lid tightly, as when new.

On the bottom board is a label that resembles a period revenue stamp.  This price tag is printed “Merwin & Hulbert & Co. / Sporting Goods / 26 W. 23d St. N. Y.” with price noted as “6.00”!!  In checking the New York City Directories, Merwin, Hulbert & Co. is listed at 26 W. 23d in 1888Prior to that year it was at 83 Chambers.  In 1894 the address again changed to 246 5th Ave.

The case, with its contents, weighs about 5 pounds

This case is very nice, no cracks, warpage, or other damage from abuse or poor storage.  All case joints remain tight.

No Doubt, Very Few Made, and Very Few Have Survived.

If price seems high, please make serious offer.
