Description:
This is a nice original Marlin Model 336 that was made when the company was making excellent lever guns with a high degree of fit and finish.  This Model 336 is chambered in the powerful .35 Remington cartridge and is serial number 23149043, making it's date of manufacture 1977.  The Model 336 was introduced in 1948 and was an improved model of the 1893 Model.  Featuring a forged and machined steel receiver, the Model 336 incorporated a stronger chrome plated bolt, an improved cartridge carrier and extractor, and coil springs instead of the flat springs used in the 1893.  The Marlin 336 was a commercial success, and quickly earned a reputation for reliability and accuracy.  In 1956 Marlin started using their "Micro-Groove" rifling in place of the Ballard style rifling, with the promise of improved accuracy and barrel life as well as easier cleaning.  The Model 336 has been in production ever since it's introduction, even today it is made by Remington Arms but still wears the Marlin name.  This example is a standard Marlin Model 336 and features a 20" inch "Micro-Groove" barrel with factory iron sights and a pistol grip American Walnut stock.  The original gloss blue finish is in good shape overall and is still attractive.  It shows some small carry and handling marks, and a few small scattered spots of light pitting from surface rust that was removed.  You can see these in the pictures provided, and they do not detract much at all from the good looks of this Marlin.  The reciever is factory drilled and tapped for optics and those holes have clean plug screws installed in them.  The factory gold finished trigger retains 99% of the original finish.  The bore in this Model 336 is spotless and minty.  The Micro-Groove rifling looks strong and like-new, and the bore is bright with no pitting or erosion whatsoever.  The original factory iron sights are also in great shape with the front sight still retaining the protective sight hood.  The original American Walnut stock set is in very good condition overall.  It is 100% solid with no cracks or repairs, and only shows some minor handling marks.  The original factory glossy finish remains 95% intact and remains attractive.  The original black pistol grip cap with a white spacer and the Marlin-branded black plastic buttplate with a white spacer are both nice and tight to the wood and free from cracks.  Everything on this Marlin Model 336 works 100% like the day it left the factory.  The action is nice and smooth and locks up tight.  The trigger is quite good for a lever action, and breaks cleanly without any grittiness or slop.  It is our opinion that this rifle has been fired very little.  The internals are clean and show no real wear at all.  The .35 Remington cartridge this Marlin is chambered in is perfect for most North American large game.  While it is not typically thought of as a long range round it has always been known as a brush buster with a lot of thump, and it has taken many Elk and Black Bear over the years. With the new aerodynamic lever action ammo like Hornady's LEVERevolution and a good scope, we bet this Marlin could be an effective 200 yard gun for most game.  Everyone should have at least one lever action, and this classic vintage Marlin Model 336 would be a great choice.
