DESCRIPTION:
This item is a rare elaborately engraved Mauser bolt action rifle, originally manufactured in 1946 (per family records), that has been remianied in the original owners family for the past 70 years. The rifle, which is in the versatile 270 caliber, was used to harvest over 50 mid size North American game by it's owner. Although not signed, the folks at G&H believe this rifle to be engraved by the renowned Austrian born engraver Josef Fugger, who worked as G&H's in-house engraver until approximately 1960.
Tha barrel is engraved with ' NoXXXX Griffiffin & Howe Inc New York' on the the top and 270 Win near the receiver ring. The barrel features extensive vine scroll engraving at the front sight and around the receiver ring. Griffin front sight with matted ramp. Barrel has an engraved barrel band for a sling. Engraved receiver also featurers an engraved Lyman 48 peep sight (aperture is not present) with a classic Griffin & Howe quick release side scope mount. Original Redfield 'Illuminator' Widefield scope is attached with engraved rings. Optics remain clear. Bolt knob is checkered and features the classic Mauser safety. Trigger pull remains crisp and safety functions effortlessly. Floor plate and trigger guard are elaborately engraved with a deer, ram, moose and bear. Owners initials are engraved in gold on floor plate and the gold on trigger guard shows extensive wear from use.
The medium colored walnut stock features European style floral engraving on both the left and right sides below the receiver, around the pistol grip and the butt of the stock. Forend and pistol grip has a typical LPI pattern checkering . Right side of stock features an engraved scene with a deer jumping a log in an alpine forest. Left side of stock has a European style cheekpiece. Comb of stock includes an embedded (and still functional) compass. LOP over a solid steel buttplate measures approximately 13 5/8" and the rifle weighs just under 9.5 pounds.
Also included is a silver buckled sling (not pictured).
Condition:
As mentioned above, this rifle has been lovingly used for many years. It does shows wear on all blued surfaces and barrel. Gold inlays have been extensively worn. Stock shows numerous handling and use marks but no cracks are evident and there are no chips or missing wood either.
The rifle with this character and all original is best owned by someone looking to use a beautiful and functional firearm. A 'safe queen' this rifle is not but certainly in our opinion is considered GOOD for a 70+ year old firearm.
