Description:
L.C. Smith A-2 20 Gauge SxS
SUPER RARE, 1 OF 6 MADE, 30” BARRELS, PROVENANCE, ENGLISH STOCK

General Specs: LC Smith, Year 1909, 20 Gauge, 6lbs 4oz, Side-by-Side
Serial Number: 5572E

L.C. Smith made some amazing shotguns in the years between 1890 and 1950.  America’s only commercially successful sidelock action, L.C. Smith produced more shotguns than Parker, Fox, and Lefever combined.  That tells me that the buying public found the L.C. Smith a better gun for their money than all the other makers.  Indeed, the Elsie sidelock action is simple and brutishly strong and ultimately dependable, the skilled craftsman built some of the most attractive and highly detailed guns in America, and the materials and workmanship were the finest of the day.  The A-2 Grade was the highest grade available in 1909, a Quality 7 gun, equivalent to Parker’s AAHE gun in decoration and price, and a very rare grade with only 213 total produced in all gauges and only 6 made in the desirable 20ga.  This stunning Elsie is documented by the Cody Firearms Museum as one of the 6, and 1 of only 2 made with 30” barrels.  The Whitworth Steel barrels are in superb condition, with a barrel inscription “A TOKEN OF FRIENDSHIP – BEAR RIVER DUCK CLUB” and gold inlaid monograms on the trigger guard bow of the previous owners, W.M. Bradley and W.L. Bransford.  Take some time to Google search the duck club and names…it is of interest historically.  The Bear River Duck Club is still in existence today (Salt Lake Utah) and is referred to as the “Millionar’s Duck Club” by many, an exclusive club of 40 members on 14,000 acres of marsh.  Mr. Bransford was the son of the mayor of Salt Lake City (one of the founders of the club) and President of the club from 1909 to 1937, at which time he passed the gun on to Bradley.  Mr. Bradley was a charter member of the club, an attorney of note in Salt Lake City, and an avid waterfowler.  The gun itself had seen much use but good care.  The stock was short, padded, and cracked, so necessitated restocking to its historically correct beauty.  The wood quality and checkering pattern were copied from the original stock and what a gorgeous piece of Circassian walnut it is, headed up and fit to perfection with extensive flor-de-lis and ribbon patterns throughout.  The exceptional Variation 4 engraving remains in sharp, clear, deep chiseled condition and the action and trigger guard were sent to Doug Turnbull for case color and charcoal blue.  The barrels were also in excellent condition and were rust blued.  The entire gun has been restored to its historically correct finishes and condition with the utmost care.  The stock was left long at 15 1/8” LOP and finished with a checkered butt, easily altered to your dimensions.  The gun is delightful in hand weighing just 6 1/4lbs. and balanced perfectly dead on the hinge pin…quite a feat for having the finest Sir Joseph Whitworth barrels 30” long and long LOP.  This is a true treasure; a historically important, investment quality L.C. Smith of the highest order that is also a gun deserving to be carried afield and used in sporting events of your choosing.  Priced conservatively for the A-2 20ga. that it is, considering the restored nature of the gun.  Compare the value of this Elsie to that of a Parker AAHE 20ga. and it becomes a real bargain.  Thank you for your interest, and if you want the gun cased in a custom fit display case we can do that here at our shop in a very attractive way.  Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity to own a documented small bore A-2 L.C. Smith.
