Description:
Colt 1911 Commander Lightweight Pistol
1968, 9MM, ENGRAVED BY OGAWA

General Specs: Colt, Year 1968, 9mm Luger, 25.8 oz
Serial Number: 60162-LW

The Colt Commander came into existence as a result of the U.S. Government’s request for a lightweight, more compact version of the Colt 1911 for officer carry requirements.  The requirements as specified in 1949 was that it could not be more than 7” in length, weigh more than 25oz., and be chambered in 9MM Luger.  Hence was born the gun we have here, with an aluminum alloy frame, a 4.25 inch barrel, and the basic mechanics of the venerable Colt 1911.  The Commander Lightweight was the first Colt pistol to be originally chambered in the 9mm Luger cartridge and came into full production in 1950 and the last of the production ended in 1969 when Colt introduced the Colt Combat Commander in 1970.  This gun, sn60162LW made in 1968, is a very special gun as it is engraved with bank note style, deeply cut foliate scroll with a nicely shadowed background by well-known Master Engraver Shiro Ogawa of Japan.  Ogawa made an impact in the United States in the 1960’s and is prominently known in the Smith and Wesson and Winchester lever rifle world.  Having trained in Germany to Master Engraver status and then opening his own school of engraving, Shiro Ogawa has created a masterpiece with this Colt Commander LW.  The aluminum alloy frame shows the engraving cuts in bright silver creating an interesting contrast to the black satin finish of the frame.  The left side of the slide has a German silver Rampant Colt stallion inlaid into the steel.  The slide is finished in a rich, deep blue, high polish charcoal blue.  The work is signed in Ogawa’s hand on the right side of the spring housing ahead of the frame.  The grips are walrus ivory and fit perfectly to the gun.  It does not appear the gun saw much use before the art was applied, and it appears unfired since the engraving and upgrade in 1969.  The 4 1/4” barrel has sharp, clean rifling and the bore is mirror shiny with no signs of use.  The trigger is crisp, and the gun is sighted with the original Colt Commander sights.  This is a sought-after Colt, being made in one of the prime eras of Colt 1911 production and a very hard gun to find even in factory original condition.  With the tasteful and expertly executed engraving, ivory grips, and mint condition, we have priced this piece attractively to sell quickly, so don’t miss out on this grand example of the gunmaker’s art.  Thanks for looking!
