Description:
This is a very cool G.I. "trophy gun" brought back to the States after World War 2 in the 1940's.  It is a Walther Sportmodell single shot .22 rifle.  This model was made as a target rifle and "trainer" for the various civilian paramilitary groups in Germany as well as for commercial sale prior to the war breaking out.  They were very well made rifles and very accurate, like anything else Walther made during this time.  This particular example appears to be a commercial market rifle and does not have any property markings.  It was made circa 1930's prior to the 1940 proof laws, so the proofs are "Crown B" and "Crown U" rather than the "Nazi eagle N".  The original factory gloss blue finish is in great shape overall, with only some minor handling marks visible and a few small spots of thinning/patina in the finish.  All of the factory markings are clear and legible.  The barrel is stamped with "Walther Sportmodell" and the receiver is stamped with the factory address in Thuringen.  This can be seen in the pictures provided.  The bore in the original 25.5" inch barrel is bright and minty.  The rifling still has sharp lands and grooves and there is zero pitting or erosion visible.  The barrel retains the original factory installed iron sights in excellent condition.  The rear sight is a military-style adjustable type, with adjustments for range from 25 to 200 meters.  The serial numbered bolt is matching to the rifle and features a 3-position safety at the rear just like the military GEW 98 or K98 Mauser.  The bolt works nicely and locks up tight with zero play.  The Walnut stock is in excellent condition.  It shows some very minor handling marks but is 100% free from cracks or repairs.  The original factory blued checkered steel buttplate is intact and tight to the wood.  It has a length of pull of 13.5 inches to the end of the plate.  The original black composite/bakelite trigger guard with a textured trigger bow is also still intact.  It shows some dings and dents but is crack-free.  The trigger on this pre-war beauty is exceptional.  It is an adjustable 2-stage unit that has a great feel to it.  Once you get to the second stage in your pull it breaks cleanly at a very light weight.  Everything on this rifle works 100% like it did when it left the factory.  We all have very little doubt that this Walther Sportmodell is an extremely accurate .22 rifle!  Whether you have been looking for one of these to add to your collection as an investment, or whether you have been looking for a new rifle to shoot at the local rimfire matches, this Walther Sportmodell would be an excellent choice!
