Description:
Browning Superposed 28 Gauge Over Under
GRADE IV, 1960, LTRK, 99%, CASED, RARE!

General Specs: Browning, Year 1960, 28 Gauge, 6lbs 6oz, O/U
Serial Number: 0F 175

This is a very rare Browning Superposed in many ways.  First, it is a 28ga. with Grade IV engraving.  The very first 28ga. Superposed guns were delivered to Browning in late1959.  They discontinued the Grade 4 engraving pattern early in 1960.  There were only a few months in which both the 28ga. AND the Grade 4 engraving was being produced.  There could not have been more than a few such guns ever made for Browning Arms.  Second, it is a 28ga. with the desirable LONG TANG, ROUND KNOB feature.  Again, they did not begin production of the 28ga. Superposed until 1960 and they ended production of long tang, round knob guns in 1965.  In a 5-year period only 837 28ga. guns were produced.  Why do the collectors/shooters seek these guns out compared to later guns that had short tangs and then square knob pistol grips?  First, they are more elegant with the old world long tang.  Second, with the short tangs came salt wood.  From 1967 to around 1971 the infamous salt wood debacle tarnished the Superposed guns, literally.  Salt was used to dry the wood which then ate away at the metal.  Browning stood behind its mistakes and replaced much of the bad wood over time, but guns built during that era are always suspect AND FAR LESS VALUABLE.  This gun, sn0F175 built in 1960, IS IN  99%+ CONDITION, with just a few handling marks in the original wood finish, LOP of 14 ¼” to the original butt plate, unaltered and desirable IC/M chokes, and beautiful English walnut with perfect checkering.  The quality of the engraving is superb, signed by Richard Hambrook a noted Browning Master Engraver.  Richard Hambrook has the distinguished honor as being chosen by Browning executives to engrave the “One Millionth Citori” that is a masterpiece and was  donated to the NRA by Browning Arms Co.  Hambrook engraved this gun after it had left the factory in 1960, so it is technically an “upgraded” Superposed.  For a Browning collector having a Superposed Grade 4 engraved by a current Browning Arms Co. master engraver is as good as it gets, as it would be impossible to have a complete collection of 28ga. Browning Superposed guns without a Grade 4 and so few were made.   This is an investment quality gun that is highly sought after and will only increase in value as you enjoy its use and care for it wisely.  This gun is over 57 years old and still like new!  Thanks for looking.
