Description:
Marlin Model 1893 .30-30 Deluxe Rifle
DELUXE TAKEDOWN, SPECIAL ORDER, HIGH FACTORY CONDITION

General Specs: Marlin Gun Co., Year 1899, .30-30, 8lbs, Lever Rifle
Serial Number: 194571

I get to look at a lot of fine lever rifles in my travels to shows and shoots.  Vintage Firearms, Inc is known for fine shotguns, but I have bought and sold many fine bolt and lever rifles over the last few decades.  I especially like the less common lever guns from the days of the Old West…you know, the ones we saw in the cowboy movies.  To find a “DELUXE” rifle documented by Cody Firearms Museum in high factory original condition with several special-order features is always a hoot.  This rifle, sn194571 shipped in December of 1899 is one of those rifles.  The records for Marlin Firearms are held at Cody Firearms Museum and are not full of information…in fact rather scant.  They do tell us that the rifle was shipped with the 26” ½ octagon barrel, .30 caliber, and pistol grip stock.  The pistol grip is what makes this a “deluxe” rifle.  Special order features and factory original condition are what gets the collector revved up.  This gun was shipped with special order features as follows: figured walnut pistol grip stocks, No. B style checkering, takedown feature, ½ round ½ octagon barrel, ½ magazine tube, and special order Lyman #21 receiver sight and Lyman #5 front sight.  The Lyman receiver sight is of interest as it has the patent date of the #21 sight, but features of their #38 receiver sight that was not patented until July of 1899.  The difference is that the #38 sight has screw adjustable windage and a fold up fine peep.  Essentially this sight is a transitional sight and is the #38 sight with the #21 patent date on it and is factory correct in every way.  It is marked with a “J” on the reverse side, the Lyman application code for Marlin rifles.  The condition of this gun is exceptional and factory original.  The 26” barrel retains 90% factory blue with some freckling, bore is bright and shiny with no pitting or corrosion, not even at the throat.  The rifling is like new.  The factory case colors on the receiver are 85% coverage and quite vivid, case colors on lever about 40%, on the hammer 95%.  The screws are excellent, and all correct.  The wood has no cracks or repairs, the factory checkering is original and sharp, with minor handling marks to the forend wood and wrist of the stock.  It appears the finish on the butt stock from the checkering rearward has been professionally “freshened up” with a hand rubbed oil finish correct for the gun.  All the lettering and markings on the gun are crisp, clear, and untouched.  This is a rare find; a special-order rifle with a popular .30-30 cartridge still readily available and viable for the deer woods.  This is a gun that is investment quality but still can be enjoyed in the field.  Don’t let this one get away, as it is priced to sell!  Thanks for looking.
