Nice BELGIAN Antique SXS Rifle-Shotgun Combination
Engraved 1870s Double Barrel Hunting Gun
Here we present an antique Belgian Side by Side Combination Percussion Rifle-Shotgun, made circa the 1870s in Liege, Belgium. This would have been a fantastic implement for hunting medium to large beasts such as deer, as well as larger fowl like ducks and geese. Firearms like these were popular in the 19th Century for taking to Africa, leading some to call them “Cape Guns”. This same concept would soon be improved in what would become the Drilling, a double barrel shotgun with a rifle barrel mounted on the barrel rib.
This one features modest engraving and gold inlay on the barrel stating that it was made of “FINE LAMINATED STEEL”. It also features an adjustable single set trigger that operates the rifle barrel on the right side.
The overall condition is very good. The metal parts have a light patina. The markings are clear. The walnut stock has nice grain. It has been repaired at the wrist and the repair is most visible on the right side. The bores are clean, with the shotgun barrel being nice and smooth and the rifle barrel having sharp rifling. The action is strong, though the set trigger could be adjusted. Here is a nice Cape Gun for your collection!
