Description:
079-0917-5029 Engraved Flint converted to Percussion Virginia Style Long Rifle Carved and Silver Inlaid stock. It is .38 cal percussion with tiger striped maple stock. This has attributes to John and Simon Lauck rifles pictured in "Long Rifles of Virginia" by Butler and Whisker. Page 45 of that book shows a Lauck rifle that has near identical patchbox, carving and medallion next to carving. Other Lauck rifles show the acorn motif on this rifle, it also shows one silver escutcheon toward barrel breech. The Lauck gun on this page is also unsigned. Lauck made their rifles in Winchester, Virginia.
Similar style acorns were also part of the decoration on the Simon Lauck rifle we ed on December 5, 2015. It also features blade and notch sights, border engraving, an unmarked lock with scroll and fowling scene engraving, incised molding and scroll designs on the forend, a silver thumb plate, double set triggers, silver oval cheekpiece inlay, floral patch box with no release button, and a toe plate. But the
Very good overall with dark brown on the lock and barrel, mild pitting, heavier erosion around the bolster, aged patina on the brass and silver, repairs and gaps around the lock inlet, some small slivers absent along the forend, repaired break at the second wedge, repaired crack at the forend tip, attractive figure and carving, and some dings and scratches. Requires the double set triggers to be set before cocking which is how these were made. Mechanically fine. The 4 petal flower in patchbox is also an attribute of the Sheets family and numerous other Virginia makers. Very desireable configuration. The acorn in the butt is deeply carved and has attributes of raise carving.
