Description:

WWII JAPANESE Nagoya Type 99 Rifle with Clear MUM

Pacific Theater Rifle Made Circa 1944

Here we present a Japanese Type 99 Bolt Action Rifle, made circa 1944 at the Nagoya arsenal. The Type 99 Rifle was conceived as an upgrade in chambering from the Type 38 Rifle designed by Nambu. While the 38 utilized the 6.5x50mm cartridge, the 99 was made to handle the larger, more powerful 7.7x58mm. These rifles were simple and very effective. Nearer the end of the war, with the U.S. successfully restricting traffic to the island nation, raw materials and other resources became more and more scarce, leading the arsenals to simplify production and materials even further. These no-nonsense rifles are known to current collectors as “last ditch”.
This example has the duffel cut under the barrel band, a feature found on those that were brought back to the US by the returning GIs. This example still retains its clear Imperial Japanese Mum, suggesting that it was not one of those surrendered but rather taken from the field. The markings on the left side of the receiver indicate that this was made at the Nagoya arsenal, gun number 50846 of the 10th Series, circa 1944.
The overall condition is fair. The original finish is 75%. The markings are clear, including the mum. The stock shows war type use and features the bring back duffel cut. The top handguard is absent. The bore is fine and coated with a nice layer of dust. The action is strong.
