Description:
Original cased examples of early British semi-automatic pistols  rarely appear on the collector’s market. This excellent example features a Webley Model 1908 .32 cal. semi-automatic pistol with all its proper accessories in its original British canvas covered and leather mounted wooden ‘Luggage Style’ case with original, “J.VENABLES & SON” label, very well known gunmakers and retailers of Oxford, UK.    While British big bore sporting rifles and shotguns of the late 19th and early 20th century intended for use in Africa and/or Asia were sometimes put up in high cost heavy duty ‘Luggage Style’ cases to protect against the rough handling and severe climate conditions they would encounter in the far reaches of the Empire few British handguns are found cased in this manner and to find a Webley auto pistol done up this way is most unusual. This pistol was quite possibly ordered by a British government official or military officer posted to a distant location in Africa or Asia who required a compact self defense weapon.   Condition: This Model 1908 Webley is in excellent original condition retaining 97% original high polish blued finish with some slight finish fading on the grip straps. the trigger guard, trigger, safety, and hammer retain their high polish natural steel surface. Mechanical function is excellent. The pistol shows minimal use.  The bore is untouched with some raised dirt/light storage rust which would benefit from proper cleaning. The pistol has lovely period silver inlaid rosewood grips with steel screw escutcheons retaining nearly all their original finish. The original magazine is in the pistol.    The pistol case is in excellent original condition with excellent original surface, original carrying handle, lock, & key. The case contains a full box of early .32 auto ammunition, original extra magazine, oil bottle with silvered top, silver plated cleaning rod, and rosewood handle screw driver with silvered collar. All accessories are in excellent original condition as is the original label inside the case lid. The red baize case lining is also in excellent original condition.   A handsome, rare, and excellent Webley who’s ‘Luggage Style’ case and silver inlaid grips strongly indicate its having an interesting history. An exceptional example of its type for the collector which would be difficult to equal.
