Description:
Colt Single Action Army, GUNSMOKE, ARVO OJALA
Up for is a Colt Single Action Army, chambered in .45 caliber, manufactured in 1983 with serial number SA61XXX. This revolver is 24k gold plated and was ordered by Arvo Ojala as a commemorative for the series GUNSMOKE in which he was involved in the opening credits. In the opening scene that plays before each episode, Arvo Ojala was the one drawing down in James Arness in a gunfight. Arvo also taught many Hollywood actors how to draw and handle a revolver. There is much information available on Arvo Ojala on the internet, so I will spare the reader the reiteration of much of Arvo’s accomplishments. This gun is #4 of only a handful of Colts that Arvo Ojala had done to commemorate the TV series GUNSMOKE.
This revolver has what appears to be an original zip tie on the hammer which has not been removed by myself or the previous owner. As stated, the gun is 24k gold plated and the name GUNSMOKE is engraved vertically along the rear backstrap. Additionally, there is a “4” on the top of the rear backstrap. Please also note that the hammer, when viewed from the rear, is angled to the right. The gun is in magnificent condition with only minor handling marks and slight barrel wear at the end of the barrel, similar to holster wear. The gun is also fitted with spectacular one-piece ivory grips.
Accompanying the gun is a Colt factory letter addressed to the previous owner. The letter lists the finish of the gun as BLUE so it appears that the gun was finished elsewhere after being received. The letter also does not mention the custom hammer, so it appears that this was also done when the gun was plated and not don't at the factory. The gun was shipped to William R Lanphear, AIR Company in Burbank, California and was marked for Arvo Ojala in North Hollywood, CA. Number of guns in shipment was 3. This gun is also featured on page 25 of GUNS AND THEIR HISTORES by Jerry R Hemphill. Also included with the gun are two pictures of ARVO, one if which is signed and addressed directly to the previous owner of the gun (appears to be a copy but I may be able to find the original).
This is a RARE opportunity to own a firearm that was commissioned by a legendary western draw coach as well as one of the most well known holster makers in the country.
