Description:
Serial #19438, .44 Russian, 6 1/2" barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some mild freckling towards the breech-end. The revolver has matching numbers on the frame, cylinder, latch, and barrel with the metal retaining 99% plus of a 20th century, S&W-added nickel finish, applied when the gun was engraved. The trigger guard and hammer retain nearly all of their original color case-hardening, and the latch has a commensurate amount of original blue remaining. An expertly engraved name, surrounded by flowing New York style floral scrollwork, is present on the right side of the frame behind the recoil shield: “Harold O. Austin". The checkered hard rubber grips are in excellent shape with only some very mild flattening of the points, and a few miniscule surface scratches here and there. The revolver has a firm, tight lock-up without any play in the cylinder, and the mechanism functions flawlessly. The revolver is accompanied by a 2016 dated S&W factory letter which lists a shipping date of October 1, 1884, to M.W. Robinson Co., New York , NY. The gun was one of 20 identical revolvers in the shipment at a cost of $13.00 each. The copy of a Smith letter further states that Harold O. Austin was S&W's Sales Manager from 1946 until 1968 (it is our belief that the most likely reason for engraving the revolver was Mr. Austin's retirement). This very revolver is mentioned in the New Model No. 3 section of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition. This is a fabulous New Model No. 3 with a highly unusual 20th century presentation to a Smith & Wesson employee. Antique
