Description:
Serial #74025, 11 x 50R, 27" solid rib barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some minor freckling within the grooves. This is a very rare example of a civilian target model rifle that retains about 60-70% of the original blue on the barrel with thinning along the sides, as well as spots of mild freckling along its length. A cleaned area of pitting is present on the right side near the muzzle. The frame has been cleaned to a fairly bright gray patina with spots of darker pinprick pitting on the left side. The checkered walnut forend has a decorative horn insert at the tip, and has some scattered handling marks and minor surface blemishes. The straight-grip buttstock is in similar condition, but does have a resin-filled repair on the left side near the tip of the lower tang. The hooked buttplate has a mottled plum-brown patina with some bright gray visible. The action lock-up is crisp and firm, and the rifle is fitted with a screw-adjusted tangent rear sight, with fixed front blade. The rifle comes with some information notes concerning the rarity of the Comblain, as well as an excerpt from “The Comblain Rifle" by Jonathan Kirton in which he discusses serial #74025 as the only civilian target model he had ever seen. The configuration of the rifle as Kirton remembered it was slightly different, but the number may actually be a syndicate batch number instead. This is a truly rare Belgian target rifle, and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique
