Description:
Serial #A475, .450 No. 1 Express, 28" solid rib barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle, built on a Field's patent, falling block action which has an exposed central hammer, and unusual forward activated side lever. The Henry-rifled barrel retains 60-70% of a maker-reapplied blue finish with silvering at the muzzle, and streaks of plum-brown along the sides, along with a crisp and clear, “SHOT & REGULATED BY J. PURDEY & SONS, AUDLEY HOUSE, LONDON" on the right side of the breech. The original rear sight dovetail was filled at some point, and a simple sporting two-leaf rear sight with platinum inlays was added further up the barrel rib. The frame has a smoothly mottled, blue-gray patina with scattered spots of freckling throughout. The horn-tipped forend has minor handling marks and blemishes, with some minor handling marks, as well as some mild flattening of the points. That carries over onto the nicely figured walnut buttstock which has a metal pistol-grip cap, and checkered butt. The action is tight, and functions flawlessly. The rifle is accompanied by a 2002 letter from Purdey detailing the ledger entry on the rifle: it was made at the Abingdon Works, and supplied to Audley House on January 1, 1894; the cost of the rifle at the time was £9.0s.0d. Also included are 1973 dated correspondence with John Powell, Gunmaker, negotiating the purchase of this rifle from their gunroom for £195, paid via partial exchange and a further £105. This is a very nice and unusual rifle that would make a stellar addition to any collection. Antique
