Description:
Serial #8624, .300 Rook, 26" flat-topped barrel with a very good bore that has Lancaster oval rifling, and light pitting towards the breech. This is a nice little break-open rifle, built ca. 1880, that has 90-95% of an added blue finish on the barrel that has left the markings crisp and clear. Some streaks of plum-brown are visible along its length, and there are some areas of mild surface freckling here and there. The rifle is equipped with a sporting blade front sight, and three-leaf rear sight, while the frame (which is nicely engraved in an English rose and scroll pattern) has a mottled, but bright, gray patina. The top lever and trigger guard have a matching reapplied blue finish, and the walnut forend and buttstock have scattered handling marks and blemishes in the dark oil finish. There is a shield-shaped escutcheon on the belly of the stock engraved with the Devanagari letters (Ne) and (Te), along with “300" and “8624" in Hindi numerals. The lock-up is still tight, and the lever rests just left of center. This is a nice little oval-bore rifle, and is in very good condition overall. Antique
