Description:
CIVIL WAR ERA SOUTH CAROLINA CSA PALMETTO ARMORY U. S. MODEL 1841 MISSISSIPPI RIFLE DATED 1852. .54 caliber rifled 33’ barrel with “JH” inspectors mark at breech. Faint “W. Glaze” stamping on left breech . This is obscured by vice marring in the same area.. Lock stamped forward of hammer in a circular cartouche “PALMETTO ARMORY S.C./ PALMETTO TREE”. Rear of lock stamped “COLUMBIA S. C./ 1852”. Early contract rifle at time this state armory was utilizing parts acquired from Tryon along with the production machinery sold by that firm to South Carolina circa 1851-52.( see Reilly’s “U S Military Small Arms 1816-1865 pp. 35-37. Nice original example showing the wear one would expect but of a moderate nature. Wood and metal with a nice patina. Good lock markings. 100% original with the ramrod an old replacement of similar type. Only 1000 rifles made.
