Description:
A custom rifle/stock maker has taken an original 1935 barrel-dated Springfield Model 1922 M2 (converted from Mark 1) U.S. military training and target rifle and made a very attractive custom "Sporter" out of it.  This bolt action repeater was altered by changing the bolt handle's profile to clear optics, the receiver was drilled and tapped, the original trigger was lightened, and then the whole rifle was cleaned up and reblued with a very high polish blue finish.  The Springfield was then fit to a stunning Claro Walnut stock.  The stock was made in a standard pistol grip with cheekpiece pattern, fit with a metal Niedner checkered buttplate, and finished with a coat of glossy clear polyurethane.  Finally, a vintage Redfield 2.75X power scope was mounted up on Weaver rings and bases.  The final product ended up being quite nice as you can see in the pictures.  The blue finish is beautiful and in excellent shape, only under very close observation can one find any small handling/storage marks.  While there had to be a lot of polishing involved to produce such a glossy finish, the original Springfield stampings are still clear and legible.  The bore in the original 10/35 dated 24" inch Springfield barrel is excellent.  It is still bright and clean, with sharp lands and grooves in the rifling and no pitting or erosion.  The custom Claro Walnut stock is also in excellent condition and makes this rifle really stand out.  It has lots of figure in the grain particularly in the buttstock that gives the rifle a classy and beautiful look.  It is free from cracks or repairs, and only has the smallest of handling marks if you examine it closely.  The only negative that could be mentioned is the inletting around the triggerguard and floorplate could be closer in some small spots, and the stock maker remedied that with bedding glass to fill those gaps.  The action on this rifle is superb, smooth and locks up tight with no play or slop.  It appears the riflemaker polished the runners and fine-tuned the action to feel exceptional.  The trigger has also been fine tuned to be light and crisp, it breaks like a glass rod.  We loaded up the original 5 round magazine with dummy rounds and cycled them thru with no issues.  As previously mentioned, this Custom Model 1922 M2 comes with a vintage Redfield scope which is in good condition.  The optics are bright and clear with no scratches on the glass or chipping, and the exterior black finish on the main tube and eyepiece looks fantastic.  There appears to be one flaw in this scope and that is when looking thru it, there appears to be "fuzz" around the perimeter of the sight picture, and a little fuzz on the standard crosshair reticle towards the sides.  This could be fixed by someone who can rebuild scopes for a nominal fee, for example L&K Scope Repair.  The windage and elevation adjustments all work 100% like they were designed to, and we were told the scope holds "zero" perfectly as-is.  This custom Springfield is a heck of a nice rifle, and as a package with this scope is classy and beautiful.  If you have been looking for a new .22 rifle to take to the range for a friendly target competition, or to the woods in search of small game, it would be hard to go wrong with this custom Springfield Model 1922.  It certainly would draw attention wherever you take it, and we are betting it will shoot match quality groups!!
