Description:
This rifle was professionally sporterized by R.F. Sedgley of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early part of the 20th Century.  The R.F. Sedgley Company bought / took in early production 1903 Springfield rifles from both the Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal that had been improperly heat treated.  R.F. Sedgely re-annealed and re-heat treated the receivers before turning them into custom sporting guns.  These improperly heat treated receivers were brittle and prone to catastrophic failures.  R.F. Sedgley bought these "bad" receivers for pennies on the dollar and began listing them for sale as sporter rifles around 1929.  There was a program through the NRA where members could have their 1903's inspected and re-heat treated by Sedgley for free.    Almost all of the standard sporters that Sedgely produced utilized a Lyman No. 48 rear aperture sight and a ramp style front sight with grooves to reduce glare.
